This series is based on film countdown leaders. This is a section of film that an audience rarely, if ever sees, but I saw daily, constantly and repeatedly for over twenty years when working as a film editor for TVNZ and freelance. The images from these film frames are a large part of my visual life and these fleeting images remind me of all the great and fantastic visual stories that were to follow.
Printed on 100% cotton fibre base, an archival bright white artist grade canvas, printed with UltraChrome archival inks. Sealed in a museum grade protective laminate. Stretched on kiln dried stretcher bars
The images in this series are printed on canvas as a way to replicate, as much as possible, the pathway of films viewed in the cinema a few decades ago. First the image was captured by the reaction of chemicals to light, on a strip of film. The chemical structure changed and the minute crystals formed created colour and texture. When the negative film was printed, again by a photo-chemical reaction, onto a positive print film there was additional texture. The image, with all this texture, is projected onto a large canvas screen. This screen also has texture from the warp and weft of the fabric. These intrinsic visual textures, which bring an extra layer of life and motion to film, are reproduced in the artwork.
